Why can't I free up space on TimeMachine drive instead of wiping?

It has not been so long since my last TimeMachine backup (60 days), and the TM drive (twice the size of the boot partition I'm asking it to back up (1TB vs 500 TB) and 4 times larger than the current data on my boot partition (250 GB) says it doesn't have enough room to backup.

Yes, I know the solution is 'wipe TM drive and start over'.

But why? Why is TM too dumb to offer something like:

"Delete backup "Oldest" to make space for this backup."

Or

"You need to delete at least these old backups to make space for this one

August 2019

December 2019

January 2020"

Is it that hard, with such a sophisticated program, to be able to delete only the "Oldest" backup data that is not currently on the drive being backed up?

Your Time Machine backup disk is way too small.

TM keeps multiple copies and doesn’t re-save files it doesn’t need to; changes get patched into the file system within the Time Machine backup archive, and files that have not changed are not replicated. This to save storage. The oldest files are purged when that becomes necessary, but you’ll not want your only copy of the oldest file purged, for instance. So Time Machine doesn’t go strictly by date.

Time Machine does tend to get befuddled when mixing big changes with little available storage.

If you’d like to make a suggestion to the folks at Apple, here’s how: Product Feedback - Apple

Here, I’d get a four or six terabyte hard disk drive for Time Machine. More depth of backups, less churning.
