QuickTime trim "click and hold"

QuickTime Player Version 10.5 (935.5) on Mojave 10.14.6

When in the Trim command, I'm trying to be very precise in order to trim off the last half second or so of a video. Most of the time, I can only adjust the yellow handle on the Trim bar at the bottom of the QuickTime window about two seconds at a time. But sometimes it will go into a mode where it "stretches out" that part of the video so that I can control it almost frame by frame.

However I can't figure out HOW to get it to go into that mode when I want it. The QuickTime Player User Guide says, "To make more precise edits, click and hold a handle to see individual frames of the clip." But that doesn't work for me; I only get an increment of around two seconds longer or shorter UNLESS it mysteriously goes into the "stretches out" mode.

Can anyone help?

Whether click-and-hold activates the stretch-out mode seems to depend on the length of the clip and the size of the QuickTime Player window (macOS 10.14.6).

For example, in my display QuickTime Player's full screen mode click-and-hold activates the stretch-out mode down to 14 second clip lengths. In a shorter clip it does not activate. But it can again be activated when the QuickTime Player window is made smaller.

So it seems there is a threshold on the Trim bar's minimum length where stretch-out mode can be activated.
