Male/female symbols

How can I type the classic gender symbols (male and female)? This was asked previously, and those instructions only brought up a distorted female symbol, double male and double female symbols, but no proper male symbol. Used all the time in biology. What's the problem here?

Open Emoji & Symbols from the Edit menu and choose the Pictographs category. If you don't have a list of categories on the left, make sure you have the expanded viewer by clicking on the button in the top, right corner.

If you don't see Pictographs, choose Customize List… from the gear menu. Add the Pictographs category.
