TRRS Y splitter not being accepted as external microphone.

I am using a TRRS Y splitter to plug in a condenser microphone and use it as an external mic. When I first plugged it in (with the mic and headphones) it worked perfectly. I unplugged the TRRS and all of a sudden every time I would try to put it back (still with the mic and headphones) it wouldn't register as a microphone port. In the sound menu it would show up only as a headphone port. Whenever I would plug in only my headphones without the TRRS it would register as both a mic and headphone port. pls help

Edit: I plugged the TRRS with both headphones and microphone into my old iPhone 6s and it registered as microphone and headphones so it's only this MacBook
