Siri & Dictation

My siri is asking me to turn on precise location for 'siri and dictation' whenever I ask about the weather. So I've turned it on, but it doesn't seem to be working... Can someone help me with this please?

If this is about your Apple Watch, what worked for me is:

  1. Go into Settings on your iPhone
  2. Go into Location Services
  3. Go into Siri & Dictation
  4. Ensure that ‘Precise Location’ is on
  5. _Also_, make sure that ‘While Using the App’ is checked. If not, tap it.
  6. Now try Siri on your Watch again

These steps seem to work if this problem happens on an iPhone as well.

Looks like it's a Catalina bug.

My 2020 27" iMac with Catalina does not work for asking Siri for weather, but my much older 27" iMac with Mojave works fine.

The difference, AFAIK, is that inside the Settings -> Security & Privacy -> Location Services -> Siri & Dictation, Catalina does not have a location icon indicating the location service is on for Siri & Dictation even though the checkbox is ticked, but Mojave does.

So, I turned off Catalina's WiFi connection. Then asked Siri for weather again, and it said that I needed to turn on the WiFi for it to know the location, although it used to say that I needed to turn on the Precise Location for Siri & Dictation. So, I turned on the WiFi as it demanded (note that WiFi was on). Lo 'n behold, it worked. And then the location icon showed up on the Siri & Dictation.

Give it a try.

What does it report for your Location since it uses GPS I think?

If you have Location Services turned on, the location of your device at the time you make a request will also be sent to Apple to help Siri and Dictation improve the accuracy of its response to your requests.

  1. Go to the Apple menu and choose System Preferences.
  2. Select Security & Privacy.
  3. Choose the Privacy tab.
  4. Select Location Services on the left hand side.
  5. Click on the padlock and type in your admin name and password.
  6. Uncheck the box next to Enable Location Services.
  7. Press Turn-off in the dialog box that opens.
  8. Quit System Preferences.

With Location Services switched off, no app or web service will be able to access location data on your Mac. Obviously, that will affect how some apps and services work and prevent others from working at all. Google Maps, for example may not able to provide directions from your current location. However, it won’t prevent websites and apps from gaining any information at all about your location. Some, for example, will detect your IP address and try and use that to determine your location. That’s why, if you use Twitter, for example, you may still see the name of the city or region you’re in on tweets you post. Other sites may use cookies stored in your browser when you did allow access to location data – those are not deleted when you turn off Location Services. In fact, location data, such as metadata in images, is retained in files when you switch off Location Services.
