I needed to turn on *Location Based Alerts* under

Privacy —> Location Services —> System Services —> location based alerts. That allowed me to toggle on Availability Alerts in Exposure Notifications.

This is an API not an app and only assists any track and trace app you might install to advise you of infectious contacts.

Don’t install any Covid apps and you will not be able to turn it on and never get any notifications.

If you want to turn this into some conspiracy theory farce then you will just make yourself look paranoid..

If you did install Apple/Google based covid apps they do not know who you are or where you are.

  • Tap on Settings, then Exposure Notifications.
  • Tap on Turn On exposure Notifications.
  • Tap continue
  • Select your country
  • Select your state
  • If your public health authority is set up to use Exposure Notifications you can now turn it on.

The Availability Alerts function does the above automatically, but it apparently isn’t enabled yet your your area.

Thank you Mr. Finch. Wondering if you can address my issue. I am in the US and have an iPhone XR, iOS 14.2. I have been able to turn on the exposure notification function, but I am not able to activate the Availability Alerts for the same reason shown above, "Location Services is turned off in Settings". Location Services on my iPhone IS turned on. Is this a malfunction of my device or am I not understanding whatever it is that Availability Alerts is designed to do? Thanks again.

Some tracing apps using the Apple/Google API do not use location at all.

The UK one does not know who I am or where I am. Privacy is paramount and that API allows contact notification without knowing who or where. You just know you were within 2 metres of someone for 15 minutes in the last 2 weeks who subsequently reported a positive test. The data purges out after a few weeks.

I mention this for those who worry about being tracked.

I live in the USA and in South Carolina, and I’m running iPhone iOS 14.3 and the exposure notifications shows me that I have an app for my state but whenever I go to click on download app, it doesn’t have my state there at all! It does have North Carolina but not South Carolina so there has to be a bug in the exposure notifications part itself and it’s been doing this for 4 months straight even when I had iOS 14.3 or lower.
