Start with a full reset:
If no help, try this:
Open the Settings app and go to the Bluetooth section. Next to the AirPods entry on the list of devices, you should see an “i” icon inside of a circle. Tap this, then select microphone, and set it to either left or right.

This helped if only to show me that when selecting left it didn’t work but when choosing right it does. The automatic did not work unless I had the right AirPod on. Thanks for the tip though."
