period inserting itself into text randomy

My MacBook Air is automatically inserting periods throughout text, email, documents, everything. I am not pressing down on the space bar too. Please advise if. (example of automatic. period) there is a way to remove the period - thank you.

Hello,

Go to the  Apple menu and choose 'System Preferences'
Select the “Keyboard” preference panel, then choose the “Text” tab.
Locate the setting for “Add period with double-space” and toggle the checkbox to the OFF position.
Exit System Preferences.
