This question has been asked, and the answer was you may show only unread selected. The problem is I cannot find where "show only unread" might be.

I found the solution by selecting the filter tab at the top of the list of messages. Yay!

Not sure that setting is available but there is a way to make it happen in Mail with a Smart Mailbox.
In the Tab Bar you should see Smart Mailboxes, as below:
If you setup a Smart Mailbox with the parameters listed and use that to read your mail from, that should work as "show only unread" as soon as you click and read the message or mark a message as read and click off that email it will drop out of the list but still remain in your Inbox. It will only be visible if you choose to look in the inbox instead of reading from your Smart Mailbox.
