Your iMac can be upgraded to the current macOS Catalina. See: How to upgrade to macOS Catalina - Apple Support

Note that any 32-bit apps you have will not be compatible after the update. The following has information on how to identify those: 32-bit app compatibility with macOS High Sierra 10.13.4 and later - Apple Support
