cannot update to new software

My MacBook Air is a 2013 model and to update to the newer software it has to be 2015 or higher so now I can't connect my iPhone or iPad to iTunes without an update. just keeps giving "update failed" notification my Mac still works fine and I don't want to buy a new Mac at this moment so what can I do?
