If you have a second generation Apple Pencil, you should keep is docked to your iPad when unused. The Pencil cannot be overcharged or damaged through maintaining connection with iPad.
The tiny internal Li-ion battery is susceptible to permanent/irreversible damage through being allowed to fully discharge - or by being left discharged for long periods. It is essential that if you have an Apple Pencil that you charge it regularly - whether used or not - so as to protect the battery from deep-discharge. Do not allow a pencil to remain in low-charge state for any period of time - as the internal battery will fail, rendering the Pencil useless.
Keeping the Pencil docked with your iPad, when not being used, will optimally maintain the Pencil battery. As the Pencil battery cannot be replaced, a failed battery requires replacement of the Pencil itself - which is expensive.
We regularly see reports here of Apple Pencils failing through irreparable damage occurring to their tiny battery.

hello,
if you don't use Apple Pencil why carry it with you. Rather, I recommend trying out what possibilities this technology offers. I definitely don't recommend having it constantly connected to your iPad without using it.
