You can't open the application because it may be damaged or incomplete

Hi guys, I desperately need help for this problem, I have work and school with submissions due and all of a sudden when I restarted my laptop (because it was lagging and my powerpoint was blank), my google chrome was gone and replaced by a question mark.

When I tried to open it, this message: "You can't open the application because it may be damaged or incomplete." appears. I restarted my laptop again and my freaking Safari disappeared. Many of my applications are gone now and I can't open many files including the Terminal app.

I have browsed thru some of the workable solutions online but they didn't work for me.

What I've tried:

  1. /var/folders --> this didn't work for me bc I only had the zz file and no others
  2. Logging in to my guest account and opening Terminal to try to access the problem account and delete some files. --> this didn't work as well as I somehow can't log into the problem account after typing in the password. The message just keeps displaying "Sorry"

I have heaps of work due soon and I'm so so desperate to get this fixed. Can some kind soul please help me if you have a clue on how to solve this issue?

Hello kait49,

We understand that you're experiencing some performance concerns with your Mac and that apps seem to be damaged or otherwise inoperable. Given what you are experiencing, we would first recommend verifying that your Mac has sufficient space. Here's how to check:

If so, then reinstalling your operating system would be a good next step. While the instructions on the following article do not erase your user accounts or data, we always recommend a backup if at all possible.
