Software update

I had a software update show up so I hit install, then the "Updating Software Update" started but wasn't doing anything so I did a Malware scan which showed a threat. I had Malware deal with the threat, but now I have a little box that says "Installing update" that I can't get rid of. Any ideas?

Try a SafeBoot https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201262

Takes noticeable longer to get to the login screen, does a 5-15 minute disk repair before it fully boots up, and certain system caches get cleared and rebuilt, including dynamic loader cache, etc. Login and test. Reboot as normal and test.

Two Thoughts:

I. Force Quit the Update:

Anything in Force Quit...?

  1. Go To: the Apple Menu
  2. Select: Force Quit...
  3. Select: The Item
  4. Click: Force Quit button
  5. Click: Force Quit button

II. Remove Item from the Quarantine:

Also, remove it from the quarantine, if and when the item is installed..

Hey there! Agreed! Which program did you do a malware scan with?

Anyhow you can’t go wrong with:

Press Command Option and Escape to pull up the force quit menu.

Force quit every app open, and for Finder press “Relaunch”.

Check System Preferences > Users and Groups > Login Items.

Remove any unknown items by highlighting and pressing the “-“ sign, then restart.

If issues after the restart, as said before, I’d startup in Safe Boot, (Startup your Mac while holding the Shift key), see if it’s normal, then reboot normally.

If that doesn’t fix the problem, can you tell us what app you did this malware scan with? And what browser you use normally? (Safari Chrome Firefox etc). Either way, I’d check System Preferences, see if you have a category called “Profiles”, and if so, remove them in the same fashion as Login Items, then restart to test. Cheers.
