USB-C Hubs prevent brand new Macbook Pros from booting

Recently I set up three new macbook pros (each with 4 thunderbolt3 connectors) for three different clients. Each laptop was connected to a different off-brand usb-c hub, unpowered, with 3 or more USB-3 connectors. (The most recent one was a "16-inch 2019 Macbook Pro".)

With nothing plugged into the hubs, and the hubs plugged into a thund-3 port:

> Two of the three laptops got stuck in the boot-up process as soon as the white apple appeared. (No progress bar.)

> The third macbook had to be returned because the hardware was damaged and neither an old nor new OS could be installed.

I told the clients to buy a powered Anker hub and now I'm waiting for the result.

(BTW -- a fourth client with a likewise brand new macbook pro was unable to copy content over either thru Restore from TM or Migration Assistant using TM -- after 2 days on phone with apple, she had to do a direct Wifi Migration.)

So -- How confident should I be these things are caused by the cheap hubs?

(BTW2 - When on the phone with apple support, I asked the apple guy if there's a problem with the recent apple hardware. He said, "I see nothing trending here...")

Have the users stay away from cheap off brand products as many of them are just Chinese knock-offs with extremely poor quality. Recommend respected name brand products. Anker is a good option as are Plugable, StarTech, OWC, and a few others that other contributors may be familiar with. I'm always amazed people pay a premium price for an Apple product, but then purchase the cheapest accessories which are poorly made which may damage their expensive computer.

It is certainly possible the Logic Board can be damaged by poor quality connected accessories. If it is a Touchbar model, then you can try connecting a good device to the ports on the other side of the laptop (assuming the user didn't already connect the cheap accessories to those ports). The ports on each side of the laptop have their own protective circuitry so the other side may work if the cheap accessories weren't used on that side.

A. External-Powered USB Hub:

Using an External-Powered USB Hub indeed seems the way to go about this.

B. View Customer Reviews:

If you were to purchase an External-Powered USB Hub in the future, read Customer Reviews of this device, seeing if customers have had success or unsuccess with performing what you are trying to perform.
