Warning - Catalina relocated items issue

Big problem with Catalina update - I had files on my hard drive that Catalina decided shouldnt be there and it decided to move them. It moved them to relocated items/security. I moved them to a new a location as advised by apple - however it force copied them rather than move them (I had no choice) - so I now have duplicates of my entire hard drive (it didnt physically copy everything twice - just the links I guess) so as I use aliases for my hard drive content I had no idea that the aliases were still directed to the folders within items/security (as there is no warning) - this caused huge issues as I was now losing random files in the duplicate folders depending on wether I used an alias or I browsed to a folder location manually. Long story short - if this happens to you, delete all old aliases as they will still work but will be putting content in its duplicate folder. Also maybe delete the contents of relocated/security if it copied rather than moved, I wasnt comfortable with doing that though.

Hello Steven,

Thanks so much for reaching out to Apple Support Communities about your issues following the Catalina update with relocated files. We recommend doing a spotlight search on your iMac for "relocated." It should allow you to read more information about these files and how they have been configured.

For more information about this behavior please refer to: If you see a Relocated Items folder after upgrading macOS on Mac as well as: About the read-only system volume in macOS Catalina

Be well!
