In Spring 2020, Inkscape released a native, 64-bit version 1.0 that runs on Catalina, or older versions of macOS. It no longer requires XQuartz. Inkscape has now updated to v1.0.1 which you can download and install on Catalina including 10.15.6.

I can't even open it. Crashes immediately. Not much time to investigate yet. Too many Macs running too many operating systems.

Inkscape 1.0 has always performed unacceptably poor on my Catalina Macs which appears to be a widespread problem. When I need to use it I boot High Sierra in which it works perfectly ok 🤷🏻‍♂️ Haven't tried 1.0.1 on those Macs yet.
