iPhone storage

Hello I need help getting my phone to backup and update Storage is full. I added iCloud GB’s 2 days ago. I thought it would automatically happen in the night if it was plugged in locked and connected to WiFi. But no dice. I have tried to get it to back up but I guess I don’t know how to do it. Can someone plz walk me through what I need to do? Thank you
