im confused because my phone has been on a screen with only, an apple logo, and no progress bar for nearly an hour, and when i try to restart it or anything, the screen goes completely black, then back to the logo.

We understand that your iPhone X is unresponsive and stuck on the Apple logo screen with a progress bar.
For this, you'll need to place the phone into recovery mode and then restore it with a Mac or PC. The steps to do so can be found here.
When you do this, try to select the option to "Update" first. This will update the software without erasing any saved data. If you're unable to update, you'll need to chose "Restore". This will download new software, but will also remove all saved data from the iPhone.
