Factory Reset for MacBook Air 2014

Hi community - I was just gifted a hardly used MacBook Air 2014 from my parents. I followed instructions from a few sources to factory reset the laptop. After I reinstalled the macOS.. the MacBook did its thing and restarted once completed... the login screen appeared and showed the avatar icon with a “?” in the middle, and underneath (where the screen name would be) is shows “Update Needed”.. and now I can’t get past this screen. Any insights are appreciated!

I've never encountered a screen like that. Did you happen to create a user with that name? What happens when you enter your password?

Try booting into Safe Mode.

Did you perform a clean install by first erasing the whole SSD using Disk Utility before selecting "Reinstall macOS"?

Did the previous owner perform all these steps before gifting you the laptop?
