Back Up Storage is inflated so back up will not work

I have 50GB of iCloud storage of which 3.7GB is used. However my iPad will not back up as it says my Next Backup Size is 898GB. This is nonsense as the total storage on my iPad is only 30GB.

How do I resolve this so I can back up?

You will have to intervene to decrease that backup size in order to proceed -- If you can't back up to iCloud or restore from iCloud backup failed - Apple Support.
