cant access photos from imovie.

I seem to have designated my photos as the system selection, but when I go to use Imovie the photos selection for import does not respond.

Junowat,

Your iPad may be locked. When you plug in the iPad you should be given a notification on your iPad screen that requires you to click on "Trust this computer". Click on that and your iPad will be recognized on your Mac and you can import your videos.

Alternatively, you can wirelessly transfer your iPad videos to your Mac using the Air Drop feature. Enable Air Drop on your Mac and on your iPad. You Mac will show that it has recognized the iPad, as long as the iPad is less than 30 feet away from the Mac. Then select your videos in iPad photos and share them to your Mac via Air Drop. The videos will appear in the downloads folder of your Mac. From there drag them into iMovie.

Hi, McDuckle,

Welcome to the Apple support community.

What actually happens when you click on the Photos item in the iMovie sidebar? Does anything at all show in the media browser?

Photos that are located in the cloud will not be read by iMovie. If that is your situation, you would need to download the photos to your physical Photos library.

You said that you "seem to have designated" your Photos library as the system library. What do you mean by "seem to have designated"? What did you do to designate it? You would need to go to the Photos library General preferences and confirm that "use as system photo library" is grayed out. That would mean that it is the system photo library, that is necessary before iMovie can read the photos.

If you have checked out the above and found that all is O.K, then try deleting preferences. Open iMovie while holding down the Option and Command keys and select to delete preferences in the box that appears. iMovie will open in a new library. Reopen your old library to get back to your projects. Now see if the Photos item in iMovie responds.
