MacBooks of any flavor have never been able to function an external monitor. Only a small sub-set of iMacs between Late 2009 and Mid 2014 could be used via Target Displays Mode.

I haven't tried it, but Turn any Mac or iPad into a second display...

No. Only 2009-2010 27” and 2011-mid 2014 iMac’s supported Target Display Mode.
