Is the 2010 iMac a 27"er & running 10.13.6 or less?
Target display mode requires macOS High Sierra or earlier on the iMac used as the external display. It does not work with macOS Mojave or later.
Target Display Mode will not work, your iMac is too new. We are asked this question multiple times every day and the answer is always the same. Target Display Mode was discontinued in 2015 for iMacs. If your MBP needs an external display, please buy one...the good news is they have come way down in price.
Hi! So today I acquired my USB C to mini display port cable. I took the USB C output from my new 2019 27” iMac
and connected it to my very old 2012 iMac.
So hoping that I could get dual monitoring to happen.
It did not. :(
I tried messing with the system preferences of both computers with “display”.
(Even tried the command F2 that I have read about).
Still no luck.
Perhaps it is just incompatibility and cannot happen.
Do you know if I can make this work??
The good news is that I did borrow a cheap inexpensive monitor and hooked it up from my new 2019 iMac using USB-C to HDMI and it did work! Would just so much prefer to hang onto my older 2012 iMac and use it for the dual monitoring. Any ideas?
Thank you so much for your reply.
Are you saying that I am not able to do any dual monitoring with my new 2019 iMac entirely?
If I get some cheap monitor am I able to screen monitor with my iMac?
You can connect an external display on your 2019 iMac if that is what you mean. If that is not what you mean please re-write your question, sometimes I'm a little thick. 😀
Whoops! Correction. My old iMac is a 2010!!
