My MacBook pro does not allow me t change from user to administrator and I have lost my recovery key - still have my apple id on all my devices and I have my time machine - what is the best way to sort this out please? Thank you in advance!

Thanks for reaching out in Apple Support Communities! If we understand correctly, you're trying to change your user to an administrator but are being prompted to enter a recovery key.
Do you happen to have another admin user set up on your Mac? If so, you can use that user account to reset the password:
