iPhoto library file

If you try to open an iPhoto library after you've converted it to a Photos library, you'll see a message that Photos "Cannot open migrated library" . My question is : is it safe to then DELETE the file called iPhoto library? Without losing any photos or anything important? The file is 100 GB, does that mean I have 100 GB duplicated, so 200GB stored of my photos?

IF you have checked that the migration completed to your satisfaction (has the right photos and they look reasonable), you can delete the source iPhoto library, or you can copy it to an external disk "just in case" and delete it. However, don't expect to recover all of the space it occupies, or even most of it. The migration uses a clever technique to have the original photos in the input iPhoto library share the same space as the originals in the output Photos library. You will recover space from the index files, change records, and preview pictures, but not from the originals, which are usually the bulk of the library.

Which system version do you have installed? You can open the iPhoto Library. migratedphotolibrary again, if you simply change the filename extension back to ".photolibrary". The filename extension ". migratedphotolibrary" is the only indication that the library has already been migrated. After changing the extension back, you can still open the library in iPhoto, if you are running system version supporting iPhoto. Or you migrate the library again with Photos, if you should notice, that items are are missing or unreadable.
