storage purchase in divorce

How do I remove the monthly storage purchase from family sharing after a split? We still want to share the media, but the family account seems to only allow for 1 purchaser for the (unrelated?) backup storage.

Family Sharing When I remove a family member from Family Sharing. What happens to their storage? How can they ensure they don't loose what's saved in their iCloud? Will Apple automatically prompt them to buy more storage?
