How to plot Data vs date in numbers

I want to plot rainfall in inches and temperature in F° against Date as dd/mm/yyyy.

I'm thinking this is a simple scatter plot, but I can't make it work in Numbers.

I've done it many, many times in Excel

I am assuming you mean Plot rainfall on one Y axis and Temp in F on another.

Otherwise your Rainfall measurement will be tiny on the chart, almost overlapping the X axis.

(or you are measuring Snowfall v Freezing temps.)

Look at the chart on the left (rainfall and T on same Y axis) v right (Temp on Left Y, Rainfall on Right Y) below. Is this what you are looking to do?

Maybe it is the scatter chart, not the dates, that is giving you a problem. Unlike the other charts that require the X Axis labels to be in a header column/row, the scatter chart requires the X and Y data to all be in regular cells. The hardest part of working with dates is trying to get the dates to look nice on the X axis. In particular, it may be difficult to get the displayed values to be the first of each month. I got it to do it except for the final value on the chart in the screenshot below, but I needed to use 10/2/20 as the final date to get the others to line up right. It is possible Apple made it easier than it used to be. It used to be impossible.

Hi TeledoRed,

If you haven't already, take a look at Template Chooser > Basic > Graphing Basics > 2-axis Graph.

It is a Category Graph, not a Scatter Plot.

The table has one Header column (to contain the X axis labels) and a Header Row (to contain the two Y axis labels).

The Y values are in Body (non Header) cells.

The X axis labels could be dd/mm/yyyy entered as text. My example shows X increasing uniformly, by 28 days.

I changed Y1 to inches of rainfall.

I changed the label of Y2 to °F (the template shows ℃ and I don't know of anywhere that reaches an air temperature of 82℃!)

Regards,

Ian.
