Locked phone

How can one tell if they purchase a locked iPhone ?

when I enter the sim I a getting a message saying the sim is not supported by the carrier assigned to the phone

That means the phone is carrier locked.

Only the carrier it is locked to can unlock it for use on other cellular carriers.
