Workout maps gone in iOS 14?

Are workout maps gone in iOS 14? I used to be able to view a map of bike rides, walks, etc. in previous versions of iOS. It was one of my absolute favorite features in the Fitness app!

Please tell me it isn’t so! I would be so disappointed 🥺

Since I updated to iOS14 (iPhone 11 Pro Max) and WatchOS 7 (Watch Series 4), the day it was released, I've experienced the following issues:

  • iPhone heats up continously
  • iPhone battery doesn't even last 7-8 hours
  • All Health data is completely inaccurate, e.g. if I've completed a 45 min run, which is accurate on my watch, it displays ~15 mins in the Health app, all calories, steps, exercise minutes, miles walked etc complete inaccurate throughout the entire day
  • Fitness app - all historical maps and Outdoor runs/walks are missing, since 2015, including the weather data
  • Not all workouts sync to the app (however, with Friends sharing, they can see the workout on my profile, but it's not synced in the app). Also, for workouts that do sync, any outdoor activity does not record the map route and it only displays a green pin on the location where the workout was started.

What have I done?

  • On Saturday, I unpaired and then re-paired my Apple Watch - this did not fix the issue or make it worse, it was just the same.

What's the fix (may not fix it for everyone):

I've now fixed this, this is what I've done (there is no risk to this, providing that you have backed up your iPhone via iCloud or iTunes/Finder):

  • Backup your phone - iCloud/iTunes/Finder - whatever you use
  • Download the iOS14 IPSW file for your phone model (don't factory reset, as you want a clean install of iOS14): https://wccftech.com/how-to/how-to-clean-install-ios-14-and-ipados-14-final-version/
  • Connect your iPhone to your PC or Mac
  • Launch iTunes / Finder and click iPhone folder.
  • Click the 'Restore iPhone' button while holding down the left Option key (Mac) or the left Shift key (Windows).
  • Select the iOS 14 / iPadOS 14 IPSW file you downloaded
  • Let this cleanly install iOS14 on your phone - it will take ~30-45 mins or so
  • Restore from backup - iCloud or iTunes (iCloud takes 1-4 hours depending on how much data you have stored in the cloud)
  • Re-pair your watch
  • Go to sleep
  • Wake up the next day

All my historical Outdoor run/hike/walk maps have reappeared. Any workouts since the iOS14 update does not appear and the 5-7 days Health data is all a mess for when I was experiencing the problem. Maps and routes are now being displayed in Fitness and the workouts are syncing. The Health data is all accurate and in sync. The phone is no longer heating up and the battery is back to normal - 93% since 6am!

I agree with people that we shouldn't have to do all this as Apple have completely messed this up - this is a bug and a serious issue with their Health and Fitness integration. I don't have the patience to wait for the fix, as it will take weeks (in my opinion) and I just want my Health and Fitness all back to normal. The biggest issue was the battery life and the phone heating up.

It's up to you all if you want to do this - do it in the evening, or whenever you've got time, there is no risk as long as you've backed up your phone.

Hello Jollino

Thank you very much for your extensive and professional reply! I really appreciate that and it helped clarify possible steps a lot.

After what you explained for me it seems also the best option to wait for the next update of Apple instead of losing a lot of time with erasing and clean installing the iPhone and the Apple Watch without being really sure if this solves the problem

Also I never was really happy with the training app in the Apple Watch so I switched now to

Bergfex Touren which is an Austrian app that’s really does a good job for all the trainings including running cycling tracking skitouring ecc . However I’m not sure if this app is available in other countries...

thank you again!

Hi again, I did all above several times and every time I had a different outcome, but I never get it to work.

Since 2 days I have the new series 6 - here I do not have any entry from my new watch in

Health App -> Activity -> Workouts -> Data Sources & Access

That's why the workouts are not synced to the Fitness App.

Any idea how I am able to have it to at least my workouts are synced to the Fitness App?

I did a run yesterday which is missing in Fitness App as well as in Rungap (Rungap reads normally everything I do).

Thx

Oliver

I reinstalled the whole thing, from backup and from scratch, unpairing/pairing or without doing it, and the issue remains. No access to my old maps, current maps without route, bars wrongly displayed.

And NO AN ANSWER FROM APPLE ABOUT WHAT'S HAPPENING AND WHAT ARE THEY DOING ABOUT IT.

Well, 16 years using only Apple products (+16 MacBooks+iPhones+iPads, 4 Watches, Apple-TVs, TimeCapsules, etc.) and I was waiting for the next round of iPhones to replace the one provided for my employer. Time to start testing and giving opportunities to other providers: My next cellular phone (next week) will be an Android.

And I'm stopping using Fitness/Workouts to track my physical activities.

I haven’t, but honestly I’m not really in a rush to go through reconfiguring things again. While Apple has done a generally good job with the restore procedure, going through reconfiguring Apple Pay, banking apps and whatnot from scratch is pretty annoying...

I said this before but I do hate how I feel about the whole fitness part of the ecosystem though. It just feels “flaky” to me at this point. Will my workout even carry over to the phone at all? And if it does, will it record my heart rate? I could use other apps but I shouldn’t have to, especially as I’m a couch potato by nature and the AW’s fitness stuff is honestly the only reason I haven’t gone competely Wall-E floaty chair human. Moreover, other apps work well on their own, but even copying things INTO Health/Fitness leads to all sorts of issues.

At least the rings’ totals add up, even though the graphs are completely broken.

I just hope Apple’s eventual fix is going to actually work for all of us, without forcing us to reset anything as a brand new device (without restoring from a backup). The fix should be as transparent as the bug itself: we did nothing to trigger the former, so the latter should not require us to do either.

I agree with you there. I really thought this would be quick fix for Apple but since beta 14.2 is out and it does not look promising. Since everyones bug seems to be different this might take Apple awhile. New Iphone is supposed to be coming out soon in October and they could be working hard to fix it by then but also maybe they aren't. IOS 14 has def been a shyt show for the fitness app.

This is quite appalling, and part of me is starting to despair. As many of you pointed out already, many of us already tried this procedure and didn't get to anything. Or at least, we tried a variation thereof: I backed up to my Mac and did a complete restore, whereas this suggests backing up to iCloud. Whether that's because iCloud is generally more accessible, or because it may back up fewer things and provide a "cleaner" restore (see my post here).

However, I wonder if following this procedure to the letter, especially AFTER upgrading to 14.0.1 and 7.1, may work. Has anyone tried it?

I hate wasting time doing pointless things, but I'm stuck working all day anyway so it will make little difference if my phone is available or not. Setting up Apple Pay and my banking apps again is the part I'm the least looking forward to, to be honest.

I'm just concerned that, should this not work, Apple's only solution will be "restore as a new phone and watch".

It wouldn't be too bad for the watch as it's just watchfaces to recreate and little more (in fact I'm tempted to give it a go first), but restoring the phone from scratch would be a nightmare.
