Workout maps gone in iOS 14?

Are workout maps gone in iOS 14? I used to be able to view a map of bike rides, walks, etc. in previous versions of iOS. It was one of my absolute favorite features in the Fitness app!

Please tell me it isn’t so! I would be so disappointed 🥺

Since I updated to iOS14 (iPhone 11 Pro Max) and WatchOS 7 (Watch Series 4), the day it was released, I've experienced the following issues:

  • iPhone heats up continously
  • iPhone battery doesn't even last 7-8 hours
  • All Health data is completely inaccurate, e.g. if I've completed a 45 min run, which is accurate on my watch, it displays ~15 mins in the Health app, all calories, steps, exercise minutes, miles walked etc complete inaccurate throughout the entire day
  • Fitness app - all historical maps and Outdoor runs/walks are missing, since 2015, including the weather data
  • Not all workouts sync to the app (however, with Friends sharing, they can see the workout on my profile, but it's not synced in the app). Also, for workouts that do sync, any outdoor activity does not record the map route and it only displays a green pin on the location where the workout was started.

What have I done?

  • On Saturday, I unpaired and then re-paired my Apple Watch - this did not fix the issue or make it worse, it was just the same.

What's the fix (may not fix it for everyone):

I've now fixed this, this is what I've done (there is no risk to this, providing that you have backed up your iPhone via iCloud or iTunes/Finder):

  • Backup your phone - iCloud/iTunes/Finder - whatever you use
  • Download the iOS14 IPSW file for your phone model (don't factory reset, as you want a clean install of iOS14): https://wccftech.com/how-to/how-to-clean-install-ios-14-and-ipados-14-final-version/
  • Connect your iPhone to your PC or Mac
  • Launch iTunes / Finder and click iPhone folder.
  • Click the 'Restore iPhone' button while holding down the left Option key (Mac) or the left Shift key (Windows).
  • Select the iOS 14 / iPadOS 14 IPSW file you downloaded
  • Let this cleanly install iOS14 on your phone - it will take ~30-45 mins or so
  • Restore from backup - iCloud or iTunes (iCloud takes 1-4 hours depending on how much data you have stored in the cloud)
  • Re-pair your watch
  • Go to sleep
  • Wake up the next day

All my historical Outdoor run/hike/walk maps have reappeared. Any workouts since the iOS14 update does not appear and the 5-7 days Health data is all a mess for when I was experiencing the problem. Maps and routes are now being displayed in Fitness and the workouts are syncing. The Health data is all accurate and in sync. The phone is no longer heating up and the battery is back to normal - 93% since 6am!

I agree with people that we shouldn't have to do all this as Apple have completely messed this up - this is a bug and a serious issue with their Health and Fitness integration. I don't have the patience to wait for the fix, as it will take weeks (in my opinion) and I just want my Health and Fitness all back to normal. The biggest issue was the battery life and the phone heating up.

It's up to you all if you want to do this - do it in the evening, or whenever you've got time, there is no risk as long as you've backed up your phone.

I think that’s it now. I realised within minutes of the iOS update that there was a problem and have been communicating with the engineers ever since. After 14.0.1 came out the ‘fix’ was to reset and wipe your phone - just your phone - and reinstall from the last back which you were advised to do before the reset. This had to be to the cloud not a Mac. I get not everybody wants to do this, however it’s the only fix and decisions I guess have to be made as to what’s the most important.

it worked for me. GPS data on workouts appeared. Only new ones and I honestly think at the moment that old workouts will not come back

By doing this I lost the ability for heart rate data to be stored. It was recording it but just not storing it. It did appear in other apps but just not in activity/health.

The latest watch update has fixed this

Back to normal but historical data is lost

Any problems I had I just called support and asked for the medical app teams they collated reports from my watch and phone so they can see on a one to one basis what is happening

There have been numerous posts on apple related subreddits on Reddit, news articles on 9to5Mac, MacRumors and posts on their community forums too.

You can see if the GPS data for workout maps has been lost forever by exporting your health data from the health app and opening the resultant .gpx files with a text editor.

Workout files with maps will have line by line entries with latitude and longitudes. Affected workout maps are missing all this data.

People rising to Apple’s defence on this are pathetic. A bug causing data loss should never have made it to public release but I can’t say I’m too surprised given macOS 10.15 wiped countless users’ Mail.app archives last year.

I did the Apple suggested fix (backup, unpair, backup iphone, erase, restore, pair-2.5 hours wasted) All old GPS maps are now visible with the map icon and a green start point, but no route (and the start point is in the vicinity of the start but not in the correct location)

this mornings workout tracked properly and displayed the map correctly.

so I’m glad new workouts are going to be ok, but very disappointed about the loss of all my old workout maps:(

Apple please fix!

I did the unpair, then paired again from backup created by unpair, then new maps started showing. VO2 Max did not work for my workouts for about 5-6 days after, then started working again. Not sure if watch update after original update helped. It was strange that it took so many days for it to work. My watch was not listed as source for VO2 Max while it was happening, now is listed as a source.

I installed iOS 14.2 and watchOS 7.1 last night. When I immediately checked fitness after the restart, my missing maps were still missing.

This morning (after a single overnight), I went for my morning walk as usual. After this, fitness had the map of the route. In addition, older maps were restored. And there had even been entire workouts not on found on the phone that were now back. I still have a few missing from early October 2020. But it seems that the rest were restored in the background overnight. So maybe those still missing might show up eventually.

Note that I never did a wipe and iCloud restore - I only updated from 14.1 to 14.2. I'm not using any betas - only the public releases and the standard way to update/install. Overall, it does seem that 14.2 is a big improvement, getting us back to where we were in 13.7 and prior.

I did the update to 14.0 on September 22nd and the wipe and restore October 5th. Since I only did a restore from iTunes, and not from iCloud I still only got start flag maps. Today I did the 14.2 update and immediately after got complete maps for workouts after October 5th, but still only start flag maps for workouts between September 22nd and October 5th. Workouts from before September 22nd are still missing maps. Hopefully they return as for j_in_spain after waiting overnight. Otherwise it is possible that the wipe and restore removed the old maps permanently.

Glad to have backed up all of my workouts to RunGap, however. I would really recommend doing so.

This is just awesome!

I had given up any hope of getting my maps back. After trying the "wipe and restore"-fix without success I was one of those for which the 14.2 update did nothing. My suspicion was that the fix was what nuked all my pre 14.0-maps, but lo and behold – a couple of hours after doing the 14.3 update I checked and found all my maps going back to 2016 now being restored.
