Workout maps gone in iOS 14?

Are workout maps gone in iOS 14? I used to be able to view a map of bike rides, walks, etc. in previous versions of iOS. It was one of my absolute favorite features in the Fitness app!

Please tell me it isn’t so! I would be so disappointed 🥺

Since I updated to iOS14 (iPhone 11 Pro Max) and WatchOS 7 (Watch Series 4), the day it was released, I've experienced the following issues:

  • iPhone heats up continously
  • iPhone battery doesn't even last 7-8 hours
  • All Health data is completely inaccurate, e.g. if I've completed a 45 min run, which is accurate on my watch, it displays ~15 mins in the Health app, all calories, steps, exercise minutes, miles walked etc complete inaccurate throughout the entire day
  • Fitness app - all historical maps and Outdoor runs/walks are missing, since 2015, including the weather data
  • Not all workouts sync to the app (however, with Friends sharing, they can see the workout on my profile, but it's not synced in the app). Also, for workouts that do sync, any outdoor activity does not record the map route and it only displays a green pin on the location where the workout was started.

What have I done?

  • On Saturday, I unpaired and then re-paired my Apple Watch - this did not fix the issue or make it worse, it was just the same.

What's the fix (may not fix it for everyone):

I've now fixed this, this is what I've done (there is no risk to this, providing that you have backed up your iPhone via iCloud or iTunes/Finder):

  • Backup your phone - iCloud/iTunes/Finder - whatever you use
  • Download the iOS14 IPSW file for your phone model (don't factory reset, as you want a clean install of iOS14): https://wccftech.com/how-to/how-to-clean-install-ios-14-and-ipados-14-final-version/
  • Connect your iPhone to your PC or Mac
  • Launch iTunes / Finder and click iPhone folder.
  • Click the 'Restore iPhone' button while holding down the left Option key (Mac) or the left Shift key (Windows).
  • Select the iOS 14 / iPadOS 14 IPSW file you downloaded
  • Let this cleanly install iOS14 on your phone - it will take ~30-45 mins or so
  • Restore from backup - iCloud or iTunes (iCloud takes 1-4 hours depending on how much data you have stored in the cloud)
  • Re-pair your watch
  • Go to sleep
  • Wake up the next day

All my historical Outdoor run/hike/walk maps have reappeared. Any workouts since the iOS14 update does not appear and the 5-7 days Health data is all a mess for when I was experiencing the problem. Maps and routes are now being displayed in Fitness and the workouts are syncing. The Health data is all accurate and in sync. The phone is no longer heating up and the battery is back to normal - 93% since 6am!

I agree with people that we shouldn't have to do all this as Apple have completely messed this up - this is a bug and a serious issue with their Health and Fitness integration. I don't have the patience to wait for the fix, as it will take weeks (in my opinion) and I just want my Health and Fitness all back to normal. The biggest issue was the battery life and the phone heating up.

It's up to you all if you want to do this - do it in the evening, or whenever you've got time, there is no risk as long as you've backed up your phone.

I'm not an Apple engineer but I had noticed the watch missing from there (in my case I have a few "older" watches from previous restores, but not the "current" ones after watchOS 7 / iOS 14). In my humblest opinion that's a big part of the problem: routes are not saved because the watch is not even registered as a potential data source for that.

That shouldn't affect older routes as they're theoretically saved in Health, but I wouldn't be surprised if the upgrade just accidentally wiped those out due to some race condition or other glitch.

I still get a high CPU usage by Health.app despite the restore from backup of both iPhone 11 and Watch 4 (my health database is probably seriously broken, unlike others who got things back), resulting in the device becoming burning hot and the OS killing "healthd", the d indicating that it's a daemon (background service). With that failed and not restarted until later on, it would explain why sometimes we get gaps. The watch just pushes that data once to the phone, always expecting that it succeeds, and never tries again because it just doesn't know it failed.

At least, that's my take on it. Fingers crossed Apple sorts this out soon, because it's really frustrating. I don't care much about my routes, though the botched data does irk me. It just feels like the whole ecosystem suddenly became extremely flaky and unreliable.

If anyone wants to see if the Health background service also gets killed on their phone, go to Settings - Privacy - Analytics - Analytics Data, and search for "healthd.cpu_resource-..."). If it's there, it will probably say something like this:

Event: cpu usage

Action taken: none

CPU: 90 seconds cpu time over 139 seconds (65% cpu average), exceeding limit of 50% cpu over 180 seconds

CPU limit: 90s

Limit duration: 180s

CPU used: 90s

CPU duration: 139s

Duration: 139.01s

Duration Sampled: 137.67s

Steps: 174

I just completed the procedure outlined by Apple. It took at least an hour for activity data to be restored from iCloud. Net result appears to be that every workout has a pin in the map but no route. When I first installed iOS 14 all the maps from previous workouts completely disappeared - maps now appear but with not data.

BEYOND frustrated!!!!

This is an interesting question. For me the problems started (or coincided) when I turned sleep tracking on.

When I first updated to iOS 14 & watchOS 7 (16th Sep) my workouts on 17th were recorded OK. The night of 17th I turned Sleep on and the next day was when everything went haywire (no workout maps, missing heart rate, standing gaps etc). But maybe just coincidence as that eve 17th would’ve been the first overnight iCloud back up of phone and watch so maybe that’s also something to do with it.

For me, the “solution” has been a partial solution; since restore, workouts are recorded with maps, no standing gaps etc but maps still missing in old workouts.

Finally, since doing the fix (23rd Oct), I’ve had one issue of a missing standing hour (28th Oct) and it gave a Handoff error message on the iPhone with only option to OK.

Conclusion: it’s a mess

so did the remove watch, format phone and restart all from backups. I did a walk and got the full map again but none of my old maps came back. Just the pin. I will be using Nike and Strava going forward and I do have backups, but this has to be one of the biggest cluster f. Apple Watch user since day 1...lots and lots of history 😒

I'm having the same issue as others since downloading iOS 14. The route maps have disappeared. I've looked at several settings to no avail, but it seems that everyone is having this issue.

My Apple watch is generation 1, but that didn't matter until this latest "upgrade." I LOVED those route maps, but now I just get one pin where I started. HEY APPLE: please fix this!

I have responded previously in this thread but the health loss of data is embarrassing. I did the remove watch and restore phone...all works again but I did NOT get the history of maps back ...all the way back to watch 0...

I have stopped using Apple workouts for gps use, and use Strava or Nike run now and back all up with RunGap. Wouldn’t it be great to consolidate all the Apple Watch sources...🤷🏻‍♂️ I have like 5 or 6 of them now.

Totally agree very strange, I don't see any workout maps or weather pre IOS14 but after upgrading to Watch 7.0.2 the weather returned with only a starting point for Work Out maps. As previously stated workout maps from 3rd party apps, eg Strave, Pacer Steps working perfectly. Tried the unpair and pair of the watch with no success and I am very reluctant to follow Apple's "advice" regarding the fix with people reporting no success.

I read that as users will be able to start recording workouts again with maps once they install 14.2 without having to do the wipe and restore, which is good. But it doesn’t say anything about restoring historical data. Any opinions on whether that will be restored too under 14.2? I’ve already done the nuclear option and it is working fine now...but I’d really like my old maps back.

Fact of the matter here is ...Apple, nobody else deleted all of my 100s of gps maps from workout history.

it’s all indications it is gone forever. A lovely green pin to remind me that it was once there.

I am lucky for having an app like RunGap and back up all content previously, but “Fitness” is the biggest mess of an app since its launch with ios14 and I hope the po for it was shown the door.
