Macbook Air, only 11mb left on boot disk and wont boot

Not sure how it happen, but the Mac HDD has only 11mb left of space and says it requires an update before it boots up. Is there a way to manually delete some files. Tried safemode and that hasnt helped.

Do I try reinstalling in Disk Utility? First Aid finds no issues. any help appreciated. I have a iMac 2010 available but it doesn't have a USB-c port to try target disk ...

I managed to delete enough files once I located the proper file path to the Users folder in Terminal. In current MacOS you have to goto the following location by typing;

bash #>cd /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD/Users <enter>

bash #>ls <enter> will display list of usernames

bash #>cd /Username <enter>

Then using the cd ls and rm commands was able to delete downloads and pictures until I freed up enough space to boot up.

Your Mac needs a certain about of space to function, and warns you in advance of your startup disk filling up. Once it's actually full, it won't boot and options are limited. You already tried restarting in Safe Mode, which would be the first recommendation.

I don't think you can use Target Disk Mode, although it is possible to connect USB-C to USB-A, I believe it requires USB 3.0 or 3.1, and your iMac has USB 2.0, not 3.0.

Likely, you need to use recovery mode:

In that case you're likely going to need to wipe the drive and reinstall macOS – I hope you have a recent backup from which you can recover your data.
