I did the same thing. It’s semi ok. If there was w way to make a bookmark folder be the start page that would solve the problem. Never understood why a company - Apple in this case - would take away a choice that is totally software driven.

Apple doesn’t routinely monitor the discussions. These are mostly user to user discussions.
If you want to, you can send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem or a suggestion for change. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem/suggested change solved sooner.
hello all, i have another suggestion that may help some people:
i tried adding an empty folder to my Favorites list. i renamed it "Top Sites". i then added some websites to the folder. now my start page has this:
once i click the thumbnail, i get this:
i don't know if it will help everyone, but it's close enough for me.
After using the new "pinning to the tab bar" technique, I have decided that I like Top Sites better. If you have more than one top site from the National Weather Service, say, there's no visual clue as to which one you are clicking on because they all have the same icon. And why have Favorites in two locations (Favorites bar and Start Page)? I'm going to make a suggestion on Apple feedback.
you can make a bookmark folder to show on the start page instead of favorites
AppleMenu>Safari>Preferences
then, under the general tab change the "Favorites Shows" option to a folder of your choosing
have fun.
It's called "to reach the left ear by the right hand" ) Actually as creative and persistent users we're finding ways to overcome these "improvements", but this will be unbelievably unusual for the Apple products, which we love first of all for those easy, convenience and friendly predictability in usage.
Thanks, is kind of useful, but this needs me to do extra work, instead of a smooth update of Safari version!. Apple should warn us about what features they deprecate, not just "give something, take away something" without informing us. They should be sued...
This does not help to get all my Favorites back on my Safari. These are gone because Apple selected not to re-path these to a bookmark. It's like taking candy from a baby. Really crappy of them if they knew this. Worse if they didn't know that they deleted these by a coding oversight!
THANK YOU!!!!
Thank you
I can now pin the websites but in words rather than icons
any idea how i get it to be the icons only ?
Thanks
I think you drag it to the left of the tab bar and hold it there until the words change to the icon, then "drop" it.
Yes - my daughter sorted it just as you say. I was dragging to the wrong place. Senior moment !
Thanks anyway
BW
Hope in the Apple they read this: the new Safari 14 is VERY inconvenient! Especially "favourites" instead of Top Sites. Flash doesn't work... (( Big failure. It's not Steve, this is Billy.
Problem is if you had the max number of Top Sites (24 I believe) they will use up all the real-estate available.
for sure.
