Apple TV 3rd generation problems after update to software version 7.6

After updating to version 7.6 today, YouTube stopped working normally. When I watch video from YouTube and try to pause it, the Apple TV freezes for a minute and then reboots. Factory reset did not help.

I resolved my problem.  This is how I did it. 

Go to ISPW website and download software for your Version Apple TV.  The software will open iTunes.  There are several Apple TV softwares available on this site. Choose the correct software for your Apple TV.  If it is the wrong software, it will interrupt the process.  I chose the software listed and it worked.  AppleTV3,2_8.4.3_12H885_Restore.ipsw. 


Before you disconnect your Apple TV from your TV, turn your Apple TV ‘Automatic Software Update’  to ‘OFF’ or ‘No’. 


Connect Apple TV 3rd generation to Mac or (windows with ITUNES).  (You will need a micro USB to USB data cable for this connection. Make sure it is a data cable.)


Connect Apple TV to power to electrical outlet.

When prompted to ‘RESTORE‘, press and hold the ‘OPTION’ Key on the ‘Mac’ keyboard while you press ‘RESTORE’. You will see the file you downloaded.  Select file to start the restore process.  Do not interrupt the ‘RESTORE’ process. 


You will be prompted to disconnect Apple TV when the ‘RESTORE‘ process is completed.


Go to your TV and connect the Apple TV and follow the prompts on the TV screen. You will be prompted to update to the latest version of Apple TV software. “DO NOT CHOOSE UPDATE!” (Or you will have to do this process again.)

Of course they do, this is what I was trying to explain to Roger Kaufmann in this thread. I used to work for Microsoft in the SQL Server division and we were encouraged to read the community forums all the time. We didn't answer them - we paid guys in India to do that, but we read them in order to figure out what our end users wanted.


Now if Apple concentrated on the issue itself, instead of the Lukashenko-style censorship, there would be a fixed update by now! ​😆

Watching YouTube on Apple TV 3rd Generation: if you hit pause it freezes and then Apple TV eventually restarts. But also, the entire Apple TV is running really slow and buggy since the update to 7.6.


You'd think they might test these updates before releasing them into the wild and causing their paying customers annoyance. Degrading the user experience is no way to convince us to buy a new Apple TV model.

My apple tv3 having the same problem after updated firmware few days ago. Youtube hang by pressing pause. Annoying annoying annoying.


I fixed it by

Download iOS 8.4.3 (12H885) 24th March 2020 from IPSW

Use a USB cable connect it to my imac

Go to Finder

go to Apple TV

Press "Option" and restore the system


After that clear clean blue sky

I have Mojave on my MacBook and was only able to see the Apple TV in iTunes. Never saw it in Finder. Also, I had to press the 'option' key while I clicked on the Restore... button in the iTunes dialog. Be sure you have the right 12H855 file. There are (at least) 2 models of Apple TV 3. The model number can be found on the bottom of your Apple TV.

It's not just not being able to pause a video. It's also not having all the other functionality that pops up when you bring up the menu: like, dislike, add to playlist, view the author's channel and see related videos.


Also using AirPlay is not really a workaround, since you are using a different device to run the YouTube app and the AppleTV now just plays the role of a wireless HDMI cable. Similarly using your Xbox for YouTube is not a workaround.
