Some time ago, you could have modified the system settings
to allow an external Apple USB SuperDrive, to 'just work.'

While I no longer have those instructions, if looking to acquire
an external USB optical drive from mac-centric reseller there
are a few here of varying media types that can do much. For
use with older Mac USB 2.0, see the port-powered model.
Almost any quality external optical drive of correct specs can do.
