Unable to Check for Update - Error message while pairing to

I purchased a refurbished Apple Watch 5 from Amazon and am attempting to pair it with my XS Max (IOS 14.0). I continue to get an error message stating, "Unable to Check for Update. Checking for a software update failed because you are not connected to the internet". I'm connected to WiFi so I don't understand why it isn't working. I've tried the following:

Powered down phone and watch

Turned on Airplane Mode, waited two minutes, and turned it off

Reset Network Settings

Deleted WiFi and reconnected

Connected to a different WiFi network

Turned of Cellular Data and turned back on

Paired the watch to my phone manually

Reset WiFi router

I continue to get the same error message. Is the watch faulty or is this an issue with my phone?

Hello tcstaton,

Thanks for that info and for choosing the Apple Support Communities. If we understand correctly, you are unable to update your Apple Watch, even after trying some good steps. To help with this, please make sure your iPhone and Apple Watch are on a compatible Wi-Fi network and are not connected to a VPN, that the date and time on your iPhone is correct, and also go on your iPhone to Settings > General > iPhone Storage and if you see an Apple Watch update, delete that and start the update process again:

Cheers!
