Apple Watch Ultra Disconnecting from Cellular Data and only connects again if watch is restarted

Hi, I'm experiencing some issues with the cellular connection on an Apple Watch Ultra. The cellular data connection drops and does not come back unless the Watch is restarted. This problems occurs when

using the  watch for cellular features. ie when it is not connected on a Wifi or iPhone connection. This is in an area with good 4G cellular coverage, the network coverage is not causing the problem.

The Apple Watch connects to cellular data when it's first switched on, and

it works and can receive data. It says when tapping the big green cellular icon: Status: Connected.

The problem is when moving to an area of low signal, then back to the full signal area, it is impossible for the Watch to reconnect to a full signal, even when clearly back in the full signal area.

Even when moving back in to the 4G area it says when on tapping the big green cellular icon: Status: Loading, and never moves to "Connected" as it should as there is full 4G signal, and it works in the same exact location when it restarts.  The only way to cellular data reception back is to restart the Apple Watch. This obviously resets the data connection.

I have tried all the usual remedies: Unpair and factory reset Apple Watch, Remove and re-add Apple Watch data plan in the Apple Watch App on the iPhone, switch cellular data on and off on Watch and switch flight mode on and off on Watch. Latest version of Watch OS 9.0.1 However the only way it regains data reception is restarting the Apple Watch.

This feels to me like a WatchOS 9.0.1 software bug or a hardware issue rather than operator issue because the cellular connection works the first time it just won't reconnect after it has been out of signal range and comes back in to LTE connectivity unless the device is fully restarted?

I finally got mine to work but took about a dozen times calling. TMobile and 18 pairings. I even connected a second eSim from another provider and it worked fine so I can prove to TMobile it’s not the watch or iPhone. The final thing they did was completely remove my account and reset it up again. As of a week now it works great.

what made it start working is I had to turn off my phone and then restarted my watch. Then I turned off the wifi on the ultra. Then I saw the Cellular sign change to LTE and then the watch worked with cellular. I think it has a hard to time from being linked with the phone and then when Im away from the phone it takes a while for it to switch to its own LTE. Still wish it would function smoother.

I have the same issue. I am on T-Mobile and have been in contact with their tech support several times. They have reprovisioned the phone and assigned new ESIM several times. Unpaired and re-paired the watch. Each time they reprovisioned the phone it would work fine for voice and data, but once I reconnected to Bluetooth and home wifi...any subsequent attempt to go back on cellular only (Bluetooth off on phone and wifi off on Ultra, or just leaving iPhone at home), I can make and receive calls but no data will be received. Under Settings>Cellular on the Apple Watch Ultra, it will say No Connection, even though the icons show connected and four bars of signal strength. I have a support ticket open at T-Mobile, but no resolution yet. I will contact Apple support too, but if anyone discovers a resolution, it would be great to post here.

Figured out this issue with Apple technical support 2 nights ago. Hopefully this will help someone out there.

If you have a VPN on your iPhone, it causes issues with the ability to handoff calls to your watch. Inevitably causing the watch to produce “called failed” error message.

I am using ExpressVPN specifically. I don’t know if other ones also will cause

Apple Watch Ultra to fail.

Good luck everyone.

This happened with my ultra when I first got it. I had AT&T reset my watch twice and it would work for a night and go right back to no cellular in the morning.

I took it to an Apple Store and they sent me a brand new watch. This watch is doing the same thing!

This watch cost a lot of money to not connect to cellular reliably.

Is this something that can be patched? I’m literally at my wits end and am thinking about returning the watch. I think I may create a video about this issue to post on YouTube.

I am in Australia, new Ultra (3 days) similar issue - at my desk with gr8 cellular coverage (Optus) AND calls from Ultra just disconnect AND calls from iPhone drop out when Ultra is on and nearby (on my wrist, on my desk) - airpods in use also .... this does not seem to happen when I am out walking for example. I bought Ultra as a business productivity aid (as well as other features) - it has had the opposite effect and most people I talk to are senior managers and C-Suite - it's not a good look
