Apple Watch not marking SMS text as read

Hello,

I have been having an issue for quite some time with my watch not marking my text messages as read. The iMessage ones come through fine and if I read them on my phone they mark on my watch, however when I send or receive a message that’s not iPhone it makes it as unread even if I sent the message. I have tried unpairing and repairing, I have the newest version iOS 14 and watch os7 I have restarted you name it I’ve done it and it’s still not working. Any other advise?

I had no issues like this until the day I activated my new phone (12 Pro Max). No issues with iMessages, but if I read a non-iMessage SMS on my iPhone, it would still show unread on my Watch and iPad. I followed the steps listed in this thread and others, and the suggestions of some YouTube videos. I contacted Apple and after nearly three hours with an agent, it was escalated to engineering. Their last reply was that they were aware of the issue and hoped it would be resolved in an upcoming iOS 14.xx release.

After looking more into potential fixes, I decided to try this and it worked.

  • On your iPhone: Go to Settings --> Messages --> Send & Receive.
  • Under You Can Receive iMessages To and Reply From, deselect your phone number. You will be asked to confirm you want to remove the number from iMessage and FaceTime. Click Remove. I did not lose any messages or experience any other irregularities on any of my devices when I did this.
  • After a few seconds, add the phone number back.

After doing this, any non-iMessage that came in to my iPhone that I read would correctly show as read on my Watch and iPad. It will not mark read any messages received before this, but moving forward after following those steps, it synced correctly.

Hopefully this is a possible fix for those who have exhausted all other options.

Did anyone ever figure this out? Unlike most on this thread, I do NOT have an iPhone 12. I have an iPhone 11--- however, I was with Sprint, and t-mobile sent me a new SIM card, which I installed a couple of days ago. Since then, the SMS messages have not be showing as read on my MacBook Pro, nor my Apple Watch. This happened to me as soon as the SIM card was changed---

All of my devices were running updated software. Adding the watch at Christmas to my devices seemed to be the start of my problems but the deleting my number trick worked like a charm and so far everything is still working as it should. Now don’t get me started on the last macOS software update to Big Sur that almost killed my MacBook Air! Lol

How is Big Sur, I just ordered the new iMac 27 in today, I’m nervous because I do audio engineering and a lot of my equipment and programs are always a year behind on apples updates, I’m still using Catalina for my iMac and have no issues, I hope I don’t have to use Big Sur on the new one, and where did they get that name anyway 😂

Seriously, you should work at apple and AT&T, I've had the watch issue for well over a year, and to add to it when I upgraded to the 12 pro max I could no longer send MMS messages to any non imessaging users!!! At&t couldn't fix it, had no idea why, Apple couldn't either, and i've spent countless hours scouring trying to find the solution over the months, this also fixed that!

I'm also having this problem. I just got my iPhone 12 and my Apple Watch Series 5 keeps acting like I have all of these unread messages. When I send a message and receive a message, it acts like I have to read my own message that I sent. It's extremely annoying but I like getting messages on my watch because I don't always have my phone on me. Especially when something needs to be answered quick. It's very frustrating. My iPhone 11 Pro never have this problem. My watch just updated as well so it wasn't fixed in that update.

This fix worked for me too! It has been bugging me so much. I wouldn’t get a notification if my phone was on but not in the messages app. If I was in the app I would get a notification on my watch but it wouldn’t mark it as read and I would get the second notification as well even after I had replied to that text. iMessage worked fine it only happened with people not using an iPhone.
