transparent notifications on home screen on iOS 14?

Recently updated to iOS 14. When I get notifications for several apps while on the home screen, they are transparent, and it is impossible to read them - there is no solid background color in the notification bubble. You can see that there is some text when the text is placed over certain app icons, but otherwise it blends into the wallpaper. Given that my wallpaper is dark, I can't see the text.

Background App Refresh not working on any app. I have an iPhone 7 running iOS 15.7.1. Many apps are not updating their content while in background. Apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, Messenger, Twitter, instagram etc, Background App Refresh is enabled under Settings for all apps. This is NOT related to notifications. I do not wish to factory reset the device or reinstall the apps because I have lots of info in both apps that would be lost.
