WatchOS7 update problems

My series 3 completed an auto update overnight to Watch OS7. Today it has shut itself down at least 3 times, locked itself while on my wrist about 4 times, failed to load complications on multiple faces (weather, activity rings, date etc), disconnected from my phone at least twice. It has also dropped to less than 50% battery in about 8 hours, normally it is still in the 80’s. Is anyone else having these issues? This has been the buggiest upgrade I have seen.

Here's another update to my Series 3 OS7 issues & troubleshooting. I'm having the frequent reset issues like others on here, using an xR and a Series 3 Nike Edition on OS7.

  • Did a phone-free reset (set watch on charger, hold side button until power options appear, hold crown until "factory reset" options appear), and after resetting I set the watch up as new device. It loaded with OS7 and then had to update to 7.0.1 again. After doing this, I was able to go 24 hours+ without the apple logo appearing.
  • Changed the watch face from the default, which for some reason was the last Activity face, the one that's predominantly text-based, to a simpler Numerals face with no additional complications added to it. That has seemingly increased stability as well.

By clearing out anything hung up in the watch (phone-free reset with new device setup) and by removing any additional stressors on the hardware (no complications, simple display) I've increased device stability. The more I play with it and observe responses, I think the Series 3 is running into hardware limitations that Apple doesn't want to disclose/didn't properly account for. I say that based on the following observations:

  • These aren't full-on hard resets. The numeric passcode is never required. It's almost as if the watch is resetting a smaller component and throws the apple logo up while it does it. Maybe it's just clearing the cache repeatedly?
  • My xR is on iOS 14 and—simultaneous to the numerous watchOS7 issues—I noticed my phone was having bluetooth issues. It would show a connection to other devices, but it would not allow any interaction. So, it would show a connection to my earbuds but audio would play through the phone speaker. It showed a connection to my Echo Auto, but audio would come through the phone speaker only and the Echo Auto could not detect the phone. Had to unpair/disconnect everything and reconnect to restore. I wonder if the watch doesn't offload/dump some memory overflow/processing tasks to the phone when busy, and is having difficulty syncing to the phone via bluetooth, and that's causing the apple logos?
  • I have hit the side button several times to find the same group of apps (Messaging, Music, Activity) running in the background, even though I've never activated them. If it's pulling default apps to run in the background, that could be unnecessarily tasking the watch and causing memory issues.

I'm not so sure that what we're experiencing isn't due to syncing issues and/or hardware limitations & memory issues that Apple doesn't want to admit to.

I visited the excellent Apple Store in Dubai today. I had two appointments: one for my watch, and one for my iPhone X (battery replacement). They said that they had had a very high of complaints about the watch series 3 issue, since the Watch OS 7 update. Everyone seemed extremely aware of the issue but had had no further updates from HQ. They said that undoubtedly a solution would be found via a future update/patch. Interestingly, my watch has stopped rebooting and – touch wood – has been behaving itself for 48 hours now.

We have two series 3 watches. did the update on the first one and it told me not enough memory. uninstalled all the uninstallable apps and it updated. watch was 100% charged before the update started and it was on the charger. after update completed took watch off the charger and it shut down. tried restarting it and it indicated less that 1% charged so had to recharge it. recharged it and was working fine and then about 3 hours later it shut down and i had to restart it however the charge was still 98%.

The second watch had the same memory problems but it did not drain the battery. However three days after the update with a 100% battery is shut down all on its own and had to restart it. this happen again on the same day.

How long before we see a fix???????

I don’t think it’s Nike watch. Mine is a regular series 3 GPS. The update went seriously wrong. Just as I thought everything’s fine, unchecked the calendars and even got some battery life it just rebooted again. I was fine for two days after un-pairing re-pairing and here we go again. Hope it doesn’t happen to often until the dame update that we’re all waiting for! Apple is in serious trouble. This is history repeating, they did the same with older iPhones once. They want to make you purchase a newer model.

My experience is pretty much the same as yours, with perhaps a peculiar difference. When I am at home I never seem to have a problem. To test to see if it has something to do with disconnection from my WiFi when I leave, I went on a 45 minute or so 2 mile walk around my neighborhood. I had no problems with my watch. But just moments ago I drove my car for a 8-10 mile excursion to go to the Post Office and run some other errands. On my way home my watch rebooted and requested my code. But for unexplainable reasons this behavior is not dependably reproducible. Two days ago I drove my other car to a function about 6 miles from my home. I stayed there, connected to a local WiFi at that facility, for about two hours. I drove home. I didn’t have a single reboot or other issue with my watch on that occasion. I can’t help but think that this has something to do with WiFi or perhaps BlueTooth. But why it is inconsistent and not always reproducible is a mystery to me.

I repaired my series 3 cellular and noticed that the battery does not drain as fast as it used to. I attributed the battery drain to the number of time the watch rebooted. I’m sure there were instances of it happening that I didn’t notice.

I just used the app Strava for gps and while it did count my activity there is no data to upload to the app on the phone.

Lastly, I could not control the music from my power beats 3 that was playing from my watch. Not sure if it is a watch thing or the power beats need updated.

It’s not looking like apples officially addressed it. As all of you know the watch randomly does it where it decides to reboot. Even after all the diagnostics sent and countless hours with several different senior advisors. My final advisor waived the repair flat rate fee but when it was sent out and arrived to Apple they couldn’t replicate the issue and just sent it back. Being furious, I emailed my previous senior advisor and explained the best I could that this is a whole lot of trouble on my part to just call and spend hours at a time, send it out and to hear it’s just being sent back the way it was. I kept reiterating that I just want to go back to watchOS6 I’m not looking for anything more. I went on and on about how I’m not the only one and she finally got ahold of a supervisor who approved a replacement process would happen when my old one arrives. I just want my watch to work. This is just so messed up.

Since the WatchOS7 release in mid-September, I've experienced the crash to Apple Screen. No remedy listed here or elsewhere has provided any increased stability past 12 hours. On Saturday, 10/10/2020, I entered both my phone (xR) and my watch (Series 3 Nike 42mm GPS) into the Apple Software Beta program.

Phone is now running 14.2 Beta

Watch is now running 7.1 Beta

Stability has not improved.

Took it off the charger on Saturday after Beta install was complete. As soon as it was off the charger, it went to the Apple screen. A hard reset got the watch face back. Sunday saw two or three Apple screen resets. Today, as soon as I got out of the car to walk into my office, I got the Apple screen.

While Beta doesn't improve things, and it doesn't look like there's a fix baked in to the 7.1 release currently in Beta, at least the Beta Feedback app lets me submit a report every time it happens.

iPhone Xr

Apple Watch Series 3

Had the restart/freeze issue since day of install. Both in the beta program now, to hopefully get a fix. Watch is on 7.1 Beta 4. Phone is on 14.2 Beta 3.

Still have the freeze issue. Just... randomly look at the watch and there's the apple logo.

I have rebooted so many times, reset the watch and re-paired so many times... and nothing works.

I got one response from the Beta testing team when I reported the freezing issue. They told me to upgrade to the latest software... which I had already done. No more answers since then.

I had the exact same issue. Given the age of my watch I assumed that I had just simply pushed it past its limits. I also thought it might be the battery. But obviously not. After I tried to reset it a few times and re-sync it I continued to get the shut downs and the sticking Apple logo On the black screen. I also tried the tricks that most people mention such as find my watch and starting from a new profile without working from the back up. I finally gave up and bought myself a new Apple Watch six. Guess what? Same exact problem. I even contacted support and they didn’t have any answers for me. They simply told me to make sure that my phone and my watch were both updated to the most recent iOS. They are, but that didn’t do any good. Now I’m stuck and I don’t know what to do. tried all the same tricks with the new one and finally created a new watch again, instead of going from any back ups. Still no luck. How do you revert back to ios version six? 🙏🧐🤯

I have been having problems with watchOS 7 since day 1. First my watch would restart every day automatically, now it is deleting half my apps. I woke up this morning to half of the complications gone on my watch face as a result of their apps being deleted. I wish there was a way to get a refund or at least have Apple fix this in an update.
