WatchOS7 update problems

My series 3 completed an auto update overnight to Watch OS7. Today it has shut itself down at least 3 times, locked itself while on my wrist about 4 times, failed to load complications on multiple faces (weather, activity rings, date etc), disconnected from my phone at least twice. It has also dropped to less than 50% battery in about 8 hours, normally it is still in the 80’s. Is anyone else having these issues? This has been the buggiest upgrade I have seen.

Here's another update to my Series 3 OS7 issues & troubleshooting. I'm having the frequent reset issues like others on here, using an xR and a Series 3 Nike Edition on OS7.

  • Did a phone-free reset (set watch on charger, hold side button until power options appear, hold crown until "factory reset" options appear), and after resetting I set the watch up as new device. It loaded with OS7 and then had to update to 7.0.1 again. After doing this, I was able to go 24 hours+ without the apple logo appearing.
  • Changed the watch face from the default, which for some reason was the last Activity face, the one that's predominantly text-based, to a simpler Numerals face with no additional complications added to it. That has seemingly increased stability as well.

By clearing out anything hung up in the watch (phone-free reset with new device setup) and by removing any additional stressors on the hardware (no complications, simple display) I've increased device stability. The more I play with it and observe responses, I think the Series 3 is running into hardware limitations that Apple doesn't want to disclose/didn't properly account for. I say that based on the following observations:

  • These aren't full-on hard resets. The numeric passcode is never required. It's almost as if the watch is resetting a smaller component and throws the apple logo up while it does it. Maybe it's just clearing the cache repeatedly?
  • My xR is on iOS 14 and—simultaneous to the numerous watchOS7 issues—I noticed my phone was having bluetooth issues. It would show a connection to other devices, but it would not allow any interaction. So, it would show a connection to my earbuds but audio would play through the phone speaker. It showed a connection to my Echo Auto, but audio would come through the phone speaker only and the Echo Auto could not detect the phone. Had to unpair/disconnect everything and reconnect to restore. I wonder if the watch doesn't offload/dump some memory overflow/processing tasks to the phone when busy, and is having difficulty syncing to the phone via bluetooth, and that's causing the apple logos?
  • I have hit the side button several times to find the same group of apps (Messaging, Music, Activity) running in the background, even though I've never activated them. If it's pulling default apps to run in the background, that could be unnecessarily tasking the watch and causing memory issues.

I'm not so sure that what we're experiencing isn't due to syncing issues and/or hardware limitations & memory issues that Apple doesn't want to admit to.

Haven’t had reboots or shutdowns, but major issue just trying to update it. Claims I was using all the storage when I had like 2 apps installed, had to factory reset it 4-5 times before it finally took the update. What’s strange is after factory resetting and downloading the update with NO installed apps, it showed all my storage was gone, hence why it couldn’t install it. Heck, right now I have 0 apps or music, capacity is 4.1GB with only 1.7GB available! How?!?! I thought this thing is 8GB??? Shows 2.5GB being used when in reality my Activity at 20.9MB, Photos & Camera 12.4MB, Mail 5.6MB, Contacts 4.2MB, Calendar 4.0MB, Wallet 84.2KB and 0 for everything else. I guarantee Apple knows about this. Series 4 came with 16GB, and series 5 and 6 now come with 32GB. 🤔

This is the worst! My S3 GPS/Cellular watch is running 7.0.1 and is constantly rebooting. Thought the issue was related to an app that was loaded so I reset the watch. Had a **** of a time getting it to erase. Finally got it to erase and reloaded it. Then the problem happened again (didn't notice until later). So I went to reset it again (with the intent of not loading any extra apps). Couldn't get it to disconnect from my account because it kept rebooting. Finally got it to from my phone, but the watch still acted like it was connected. So after dozens of tries, the watch finally gets into pairing mode. But it reboots every 3 minutes or so. So once I get it to start pairing, it reboots and never pairs... WTH???

My series 3 completed an auto update overnight to Watch OS7. but ever since it has restarted at least 3 times each day.

I went to an apple store, they said maybe it's because of charging accessories ( which all of them are original in the box apple brand) then they told me I need to reset the apple watch, it may help, which I did and unfortunately after one day the same problem occurred again, and I really don't know what to do. Since I am a teacher and commercial manager, I really need my apple watch everywhere I go. when will it be fixed?

having the same issues... updating was difficult: got notification that update was available but kept getting notification that watch needed to be plugged in with 50% or more battery life and phone on wifi nearby - which is always was - but update failed several times. now since successfully updating, it crashes ALL DAY LONG! it won’t properly display complications and activity wipes out until finally showing accurate info many minutes later... which is extremely frustrating while exercising. I’m baffled how this wasn’t evident during testing of this update prior to its release... ordered newest apple watch prior to learning of these issues - please fix this before I get so turned off that I just return my new watch after it arrives...

My AW Series 3 has had all the same issues as reported by there's, constant restarts, app not loading etc.

I unpaired it

Tried to re-pair it and the watch wanted to update to 7.01 which had already been done before.

It took 5 attempts to get the watch paired to my iPhone 11 14.01.

The result was the same, crash after crash.....

Now the watch has unpaired itself (no intervention from me at all!)

It is now sitting in a draw as a paper weight - well done Apple, you have surpassed yourselves.

Also having the issues reported. Series3 with 7.0.1 and every time I look down at my wrist it's an Apple logo rebooting. Reduced battery life. First time I've ever seen Heart Rate not work was this release. GPS not recording tracks and often doesn't show current pace. Complete amateur hour at Apple here.

Can anybody please post actual instructions if it's possible to downgrade (upgrade ?!) to Watch OS 6? If not, I will expect an upgraded hardware model from Apple as compensation for bricking my perfectly usable and lovely watch.

Just adding my voice that I'm having the exact same issue. Series 3, worked fine prior to watchOS 7.0.0 (tried 7.0.1 but didn't improve anything).

My watch used to work fine (had problems with Siri, calls, and syncing issues, but nothing this bad). Now the screen goes dark randomly each day and is completely unresponsive. For me only a hard reboot fixes the problem.

I called Apple support and they ran remote diagnostics which seemed completely useless (she just said "your battery looks Ok" - really?). After that she said they'd help me replace the unit; the hilarious thing is that there's a good chance the new unit will come with the latest watchOS installed so it will be having the same problems.

I've been an Apple diehard since the early 90s, it is incredibly sad just how low Apple's quality bar has sunk in recent years. I seem to get burned with every update, whether it's iOS/watchOS/macOS.

Yep - all of this - me too. In the last couple weeks, around the time of the upgrade, my watch battery drains incredibly fast. With normal use my watch used to last 1-1.5 days without needing a charge; and now I need to charge it several times throughout the day. This wasn’t a gradual decline either, rather an abrupt failing. My battery health is still 91%, but the watch can’t hold a charge at all anymore. I’ve deleted nearly all apps, push notifications, music, messages, pictures, etc, and it still dies within hours.

Oh, and ever since the update the watch locks out and resets several times a day.

If this is some ploy to get me to buy another watch, no way. I’ll go back to Fitbit.

My Apple Watch series 3 (cellular GPS) has also rebooted randomly several times since Watch OS 7 update, battery draining faster. Then last night, it did not store sleep data despite being unlocked on my wrist. And today it will not ping my iPhone X even though it is paired with my phone. Very buggy. I am disappointed too and hope there is a fix soon. I am going to re-pair it with my phone and restart everything, but I am not optimistic until there is an update to address these issues. :(

Mine did it second time today FYI, two reboots an hour apart. And yes, I do think Apple would purposely cripple older devices. You can now choose between SE and a 3. If the rumor is spread 3 are getting reboots, SE will sell better and they can rule Series3 out. According to their online store it’s only $80 more expensive at basic version. Besides, they’ve done it before. They can afford it. But I can’t afford a new watch. And since there is no Genius Bar in my country I have to take it to an authorized dealer who are taking it to Ireland if I want to downgrade. Update that works would be much more suitable. If you’re reading this Apple, please do something and prove me wrong! In the meantime I’ll just wait for another reboot...
