Camera frame rate drops on FaceTime calls (13" MacBook Pro 2020)

I'm using FaceTime on my 2020 13" MacBook Pro. After several minutes on the call (anywhere from 4-10 min), the camera will suddenly turn off (the green light goes off) for half a second, then switch back on. When the camera is restored, the video feed is noticeably choppy, as if the frame rate has decreased. Users on the other side have told me that the feed then also appears quite blurry. Occasionally, after a further 5-10 min, the camera may turn off and on again, and the higher frame rate and crisper image is restored.

Is this meant to happen? Is this a preset function within FaceTime that kicks in if the connection is not strong enough to hold the higher frame rate?

Or is this a problem with my hardware? I've reached out to Apple support in the past and run through various hardware resets, and even a full MacOS reinstall, but the problem is still happening.

Hey there Seb Turner,

We understand you're experiencing an issue with the camera quality in FaceTime on your MacBook Pro, and we'd like to share a resource that can help.

Get started here: If FaceTime isn't working on your Mac

Specifically, the "If your camera or microphone doesn’t work" and "If you need help with your connection or call quality" sections may help.

Cheers!
