External USB drive mount problems: container has been mounted by APFS version 1412.141.1, which is newer than 1412.101.1

I just moved a brand new WD Elements 3TB external USB drive from one macbook to another and now it says it can't repair that drive.

The drive still mounts and I can see the files but Catalina says I will not be able to write to the disk.

Diskutility gives the following error message:

Repairing file system.

Volume was successfully unmounted.

Performing fsck_apfs -y -x /dev/rdisk3s1

Checking the container superblock.

File system check exit code is 8.

My plan is to make a backup and reformat the external drive but it would be very interesting to know if this is a drive issue or if something goes wrong with ejecting external drives in Catalina. I had a similar issue with a Seagate drive a few months back and there are lots of posts on similar topics but either way I was curious if anyone can explain the error above.

Hey RogWNZ!

Sorry for the troubles, can you take a pic of Disk Utility after selecting View > Show All Devices?

Or from Utilities > Terminal: diskutil apfs list?

Given the results of first aid on the internal drive, if it’s a Fusion drive and giving that error, it may need to be reset (Erased) to fix:

Did it give some type of error when restoring the backup? (Or just boot to the prohibitory sign when it finished)? I imagine that’s the reason for running first aid on the backup drive.

If so can you give the error? And also the OS version of the Mac who produced the backup?

Thanks!

I would not use the APFS file system for an external drive unless you are using that external drive as a boot drive for macOS 10.14+. APFS is a new file system that still has lots of growing pains. Disk Utility has never been a good app at repairing any file systems, but it is extremely terrible at repairing APFS. Unfortunately Apple has not released the necessary APFS documentation so that third party utilities can repair APFS so users are stuck with temporarily transferring files from a corrupt/damaged APFS file system so that a drive can be erased with a clean file system.

If you want to attempt to check the health of the USB drive, then you can try using DriveDx. You will need to install a special USB driver so that DriveDx is able to access the health information on the USB drive. However, even with this special USB driver DriveDx may not be able to access the health information since some external drives block this communication. Feel free to post the DriveDx report here using the "Additional Text" icon which looks like a piece of paper.

I was initially trying to restore from a TM backup after getting the no entry sign.

Any idea?

First Aid shows an unfixed error in the details so you will need to first make sure you have a good backup, thenerase the entire Fusion Drive before restoring from a backup. This is the only way to fix an APFS file system error if First Aid is unable to repair it since there are no third party utilities to repair an APFS volume since Apple has not released the necessary APFS documentation yet. There is a chance you may need to even rebuild the Fusion Drive as mentioned by @DiZoE. I would first try erasing the Fusion Drive and running First Aid again to see if the error still exists which would indicate needing to rebuild the Fusion Drive or it may even indicate the hard drive is beginning to fail. You can check the health of the hard drive as I mentioned in an earlier post in this thread.
