Camera exposure/focus controls not visible

I’m using an iPhone Xs on iOS 14 and I’m finding the new exposure and focus lock controls aren’t visible in the camera app. I have tapped the chevron icon at the top of the screen to expose the additional camera controls but the +/- control which is supposed to be visible is not there. Grateful for any ideas.
