I get a warning that I have problems with my Mac Hi sierra 10.13.6 and to scan my computer within 3 minutes or serious damage will occur. The page looks authentic. Is this legit?

It is a scam attempt. Do not download anything, do not give them any personal or financial information, do not give them remote access to your computer.

No. It is not legit. No webpage can scan your computer. It's a scam. Ignore.
The problem only happens when I try to use Safari. So now I use Firefox
Shut down Safari. While pressing and holding the shift key launch Safari. This will launch Safari in a clean state.
This seems to have solved the problem with Safari, thank you
