If I purchased an Apple TV device/box several years ago, for $99.00, what can I do with it now? Do I need to subscibe to Apple TV or Apple TV+ to watch shows or movies? I hadn't used it for quite awhile, and last night tried to watch 'The Morning Show' series. I could only see episodes 1 & 2. I'm just asking if the Apple TV device is now obsolete?

You can still use it, some things might not be supported as they are with the newer equipment. You do not need to subscribe to Apple TV plus. You do if you wish to continue watching the morning show because it’s only found in Apple TV plus. Apple TV+ features Apple Originals and does not include iTunes movies or other channels, which is content you subscribe to, purchase or rent.

Identify your Apple TV remote - Apple Support
If you could watch some Apple TV+ content on it, then your model Apple TV is at least 3rd generation.
Apple TV (3rd generation) is not obsolete, and should receive support and updates for another year.
Apple TV (4th generation or later) are current models.
To see all of the Apple TV+ content, you will have to subscribe. Without subscription, a few select teaser episodes may be available.
