WatchOS 7 app menu screen too big

Hi

Just upgraded from WatchOS6 to 7.

Now the "home screen" showing the application honey comb is way too big compared to the previous version. It shows way less icons than before.

Problem is that zooming out doesn't retain the position. It's either too big or showing all apps (barely usable).

Any way to adjust this screen once and for all???

If not, any actual way to go back to watchOS 6 ?

Thanks for any help and/or link for downgrade instructions.

Hi sjordi,

Thanks for explaining this issue further, and sharing this picture. It looks like you have a feedback regarding the apps layout on the Apple Watch screen, and we'd be happy to get you pointed in the right direction to get your opinion heard regarding this.

Hello sjordi,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. We understand having issues displaying apps on your Apple Watch screen after updating.

We understand how you may feel that going back to an older watchOS version is a solution. Due to the security of your device, downgrading the software is not something that we are able to support.

We want you to get the most out of using your Apple Watch and want to help. Have you done any troubleshooting for this issue such as restarting? If not, restart both your iPhone and your Apple Watch.

Another thing we can check is to make sure that both your iPhone and Apple Watch are updated to the most recent iOS 14.0.1, and watchOS 7.0.1 versions. It’s a good idea to backup your iPhone before updating.

Hi

Yes I'm on the latest software on each device.

The problem has nothing to do with rebooting or not.

It's again a design decision to show bigger icons on the AppleWatch that has been imposed rather than offered as an option.

Jony Ive has finally left Apple, but obviously his way of thinking still lingers itself on customers.

Now we see three icons max across the AppleWatch screen forcing users to blindly navigate around looking for other icons when it was usable before version 7 (with 5 icons). Zooming out is of no help as it doesn't retain the zooming ratio and comes back to 3 icons, or switches to the full tiny icons view (unusable).

Too bad.

Hi sjordi,

Thanks for getting back to us with those additional details. We understand your concern with the way your Apple Watches displaying apps after updating. We were unable to replicate this issue on our devices, but we'd be happy to investigate this issue further with you.

It looks like apps are so tiny or the display only shows three app icons when you zoom in. Just to confirm, are you using these steps?

Organize apps on Apple Watch

Does this issue happens with all apps or specific ones? If it happens with specific ones, did you try to remove, and reinstall them on your Apple Watch?

Also, since noticing this, did you get a chance to install any available app updates? Here's how:

Install apps on your Apple Watch

If that didn't help, next we’d like to have you unpair, and re-pair your Apple Watch. However, before you do, we recommend ensuring your Apple Watch is backed up as shown here:

Back up your Apple Watch

Once you have a backup, check out our page for unpairing here:

Unpair and erase your Apple Watch

When you re-pair your device, test again, and let us know if the behavior changes.

Cheers!

Hi,

Again it appears to be a design decision on Apple side. Pairing, unpairing, rebooting, reorganizing won't have any impact on poor design flaws.

It's not app related. It's the honeycomb design that has changed, has been zoomed in now in WatchOS7 and it shows a maximum of 3 icons wide screen now. See attached screenshot at normal size when pressing the crown.

Navigating between apps now is cumbersome. If you organized the honey comb with some logically related apps next to each others, you have to slide right/left now instead of accessing them easily when we had more icons shown on screen when pressing the crown.

There is nothing one can do on this besides sighing. One more time.

Hi sjordi!

I had the same issue and was stumped for a while but figured out the solution. Last week I had gone into the accessibility features and turned on "Reduce Motion" in an attempt to improve battery life on the watch with the new OS7. Apparently turning this on makes the apps larger. Check to see if yours is on because I switched mine off and my icons reduced down to the normal size.

Hope that helps!
