problems with time machine back ups

I'm using Catalina and backing up with Time Machine to a Synology hard drive. All went well until Aug. 18, at which point I got message: "The identity of the backup disk "Synology local" has changed since the previous backup." That was news to me, as I'd not changed anything. HELP.
