TV OS 14 - problems?

It appears the new TV OS 14 has prevented my Apple TV from connecting to my Sony TV. HAs anyone else had a problem since installing the new OS? I have a new Apple TV 4K box. I have rebooted Apple TV box and also checked the HDMI cables, including switching the Apple TV HDMI cable to a functioning one that I was using for my set top box. Nothing seems to work. Unfortunately I don't think there is a way to get to the Apple TV setting if you can't connect to the TV.

Has anyone else had difficulties after downloading the new OS? Any suggestions?

Also having this issue with my 2018 Samsung TV (QE65Q7FNA). Since the tvOS 14 update I rarely get a connection and if I get a connection, it keeps dropping after a few minutes. In addition my Samsung TV doesn't recognize the Apple TV as an "Apple TV" and just says "Unknown Device".

I've tried:

  • multiple HDMI cables
  • resetting/reinstalling my AppleTV
  • resetting my TV

If I connect my Apple TV to a standard computer monitor it works perfectly.

I did that unplug reboot as well as holding in two buttons on the remote to reboot. Nothing helped.

While it could be a corrupt download but the TV box worked for about a week with the new OS before the issue showed up. Perhaps I hadn't used the corrupt code until now. Unfortunately, there is not way to check what is going on with the Apple TV 4K if it doesn't show up on the TV. I also tried to screen cast my MacBook Pro [which I have done many times before] and it doesn't work at all. Just a blank TV screen.

I tried your formula of rebooting the modem, router and then Apple TV. The problem still persisted. I have called

Apple Support who concluded that I need to send in the Apple TV device. They will either repair the unit or replace it. It will take 7-10 days [ugh] since there are almost no Apple stores open locally.

Apple TV 4K has no ability to connect directly from another device if the connection with your TV fails so there is no ability to check settings or otherwise diagnose problems. This lack of connectivity is a new "feature" of 4K Apple TV. Apple may want to rethink this. My guess is that there is some minor software issue that can be easily fixed by the Apple techs. I have not had any issues with my Apple TV 4K before this.

I cannot replicate any of the errors you are experiencing. that leads me to believe you may have received a corrupt download which would not be an Apple issue. Have you attempted to uninstall the apps (Spotify, Netflix & Disney +) causing the problems, re-add them and then test to see if they work? Please try that see if that might help.

TV0S 14 was a major update and took some time to download and install, unless a user has an excellent connection and great bandwidth to handle the download it could not become corrupt.

Thanks for the response. From further digging it looks like the internet connectivity is gone entirely; I can’t access the App Store either. Given I’m having similar WiFi connection issues with my iPad which just updated to OS 14,nInhave tethered the TV to my phone. Internet and apps are now working. Clearly there’s an issue with WiFi, but my WiFi is otherwise working fine (2x Ipads and 2x iPhones on v13, MacBook, windows laptop all have working Internet). Have tried rebooting the router but that’s not fixed things. Any thoughts?

Hi all,

Just an update...I managed to fix things so thought I’d share in case it helps anyone else.

As it turns out, the problem was DNS. I noticed when looking in the settings on my Apple TV that there was no DNS server listed. Specifying a manual DNS address fixed it. In my case I used 208.67.222.222 (OpenDNS).

Doing the same on my IPad also fixed things there.

So it would see that something in the v14 of IPadOS and TVOS doesn’t like automatically allocated DNS addresses for some reason.

If you’re having this same issue, you could probably also use different DNS servers like 8.8.8.8 (Google) or 1.1.1.1 (Cloudflare), but I haven’t tested these myself.

Thanks,

Ben
